What a FRITZ!Box water sensor does well
- No new bridge: The FRITZ!Box is the base. The sensor is registered like a FRITZ!DECT device – no extra hub, no extra app.
- Local instead of cloud: Everything is processed in the FRITZ!Box, with no manufacturer cloud and no subscription.
- Affordable: The OWSM-1 costs €49.99 in the manufacturer's shop. Extensions for the probe up to 10 m are available as accessories.
- Rules with FRITZ!DECT: On alarm, the FRITZ!Box can switch a DECT socket – cutting power to the washing machine or dishwasher, or turning on a siren.
- Battery-powered: The sensor runs on two AAA batteries, up to six months according to the manufacturer, and needs no socket where it sits.
Why it falls short in a pump sump
- Only at floor level: The alarm comes when water reaches the probe. If the pit overflows, it's already standing in the basement by then.
- No level, no trend: The sensor only knows wet or dry. It can't show how high the water stands in the pit or how fast it rises when it rains.
- Pump failure goes unnoticed: The FRITZ!Box can't see whether the pump starts or how often it runs.
- Silent during a power outage: The sensor has batteries, the FRITZ!Box does not. Without power it forwards no alarm, and both email and app messages need an internet connection anyway.
- No siren in the sensor: The OWSM-1 has no buzzer of its own. It only gets loud with an extra siren on a DECT socket – which also fails in a power cut.
- Not for the pit: The housing is rated IP20, for dry indoor rooms. The Zigbee sensors on FRITZ!'s compatibility list also only detect water on the floor, not a level.

When do you need which?
A FRITZ!Box water sensor is enough if …
- You use a FRITZ!Box and want to detect water at the washing machine, water heater or sink
- You prefer local processing without a cloud
- You want to switch a FRITZ!DECT socket on alarm
- Your basement has no pump sump and no lifting station
Drainbee fits if …
- Your basement has a pump sump, a drainage pit or a lifting station
- You want to see the level in the pit before anything overflows
- You want to know how often the pump runs and how much water flows in when it rains
- You want a warning even when the power or WiFi goes out
Or both: The DECT sensor on the FRITZ!Box for the laundry and boiler room, Drainbee in the pit. Drainbee connects over WiFi (2.4 GHz) to your router – a FRITZ!Box included – but works independently of the FRITZ! smart home.
Verdict
It isn't enough for a pump sump. It knows no level, only notices a pump failure once the floor is wet, and with no power at the FRITZ!Box no alert gets through. Drainbee measures the water level in the pit, shows pump cycles and inflow, and also reports power and WiFi outages.
