What the Bosch water detector does well
- Early alert at floor level: When water runs under the detector, the contacts on its underside close. It triggers from a water height of 1.5 mm.
- Local beep: The detector sounds up to 75 dB(A) at one metre. The siren is built into the device – so it still beeps if the controller or router has just gone down.
- App alert with emergency quick dial: The detector only works together with the Smart Home Controller or Controller II. Through it you get a push notification and can dial an emergency number straight from the app.
- Automations and Apple HomeKit: Via the controller the detector can be added to Apple HomeKit. Within Bosch Smart Home it can, for example, use Philips Hue lights as a visual signal or switch appliances off through a smart plug.
- Long battery life: According to Bosch, two AAA batteries last up to three years. The compact detector (75 × 75 × 25 mm) fits under a washing machine or dishwasher.
Why it falls short in a pump sump
- Alert only at floor level: The detector reacts once water reaches the floor. In a pump sump the level often rises for hours before that – and it notices none of it. By the time it beeps, the sump has already overflowed.
- No level, no history: It only knows wet or dry. You can't see how high the water stands in the sump, how quickly it flows in or how often the pump starts.
- Pump failure goes unnoticed for a long time: When the pump stops, the water in the sump quietly keeps rising. The Bosch detector only speaks up once it overflows.
- Not built for the sump: The housing is rated IP44 against splashing water. It can't be hung in a pump sump or left lying in water permanently.
- A power cut breaks the alert chain: The detector runs on batteries and keeps beeping. But the controller and your router need power. When it fails – often during heavy rain, exactly when the pump stops too – no push notification gets through. If you're not home, you won't hear about it.

When do you need which?
The Bosch water detector is enough if …
- You want to detect leaks at the washing machine, dishwasher, water heater or boiler
- You already run Bosch Smart Home with a controller or want to see the detector in Apple HomeKit
- Your basement has no pump sump, no drainage and no lifting station
Choose Drainbee if …
- You want to monitor a pump sump, drainage or lifting station
- You want to be warned before water reaches the basement floor
- You want to see level, pump cycles and inflow over time – after heavy rain, for example
- You want to hear about it even when power or WiFi goes out
- You don't want to build a smart home system with a controller just for this
Or both: Bosch water detectors under the washing machine and water heater – Drainbee in the pump sump. Both systems work independently and alert you through their own app.
